Sony, Sony, Sony…*smh*

Today Sony came out with a new update for their PS3. I heard rumors from forums that they may kill the “other os” feature that has been included in the first generation PS3s. They finally did it! But why?!?

I received my PS3 during the first year it came out. One of the features that I liked and persuaded me to buy a PS3 was the feature to run Linux. I was never a big fan of Linux, but using a game console as a backup computer seemed too good to be true. You could setup this desktop type of computer anywhere you have a component cable or HDMI connection. I had the xbox 360, but in no way it could run another ps3 without Microsoft bricking it. Within a couple days of having my PS3, I upgraded the hard drive and installed Yellow Dog Linux. It was the only OS that was fit to run on the PS3 gaming console. I used it sparingly until they updated the bugs and refreshed to a new version of YDL.

I have used YDL a dozen times within a month. I just liked the feature of having it there. So this new 3.21 update totally KILLS the option of having Linux and using another OS. I am pretty bummed! The option works just fine, why kill it! I tried not installing the update and it does not allow me to sign on to the PS3 network and play online. I just HAVE to install the update in order to play online with friends.

Sony, you have just limited the overall power of a PS3 to its customers. Taking out the option of installing another OS just makes it similar to other gaming consoles. I believe this was one of the main factors in differentiating your product from Microsoft and Nintendo.
